Colorado is not the easiest place for our lawns, plants and trees to flourish on their own. There are a few ways to help, and aeration may be an option available to help rebuild or maintain healthy lawns. Aeration nourishes soil and this will help you achieve a green lawn.
We all want the lush, green grass pictured here. If the lawn appears a bit sparse and dry, then it may be time for an extra boost. Colorado is notorious for having extreme weather temperatures, dry clay soils, and damaging winds. Today may hit upper 60’s or lower 70’s, but another foot of snow is possible by tomorrow. Aeration may be the answer to getting the extra lush lawn we all desire.
What is Aeration and How Does it Work
Aeration helps plant and tree roots absorb water and nutrients into root-zone a few inches below the soil line. According to local Denver arborist David Merriman, “Colorado is arid, the soil is clay and there is not enough water to keep the plants’ roots alive.” Aeration may be a way to help your soil and plants become more healthy. How does aeration work?
Aeration is performed with different kind of aerators. There two main type. For instance, some simply have a stake that punches holes in the ground. The other pictured on the right is a hollow probe that removes soil cores from the ground, which some experts believe allow for better water and nutrient movement and absorption.
If you enjoy do-it-yourself projects, you can buy a tool and do it yourself, and this is only recommended if you follow safety recommendations. It may take some or all of your day off, but if you enjoy outdoor lawn care work, you can get outside and spend some time improving your yard. However, if you don’t have the time or energy to spend on your lawn, you can hire an insured and certified tree service to do this for you.
Aeration breaks up the soil and allows nutrients to reach the plant root zone. Not only is this beneficial for grass, but it is also beneficial for trees needing extra nourishment.
